Ensuring the Safety of our Team and the Environment with RoHS Compliance at Reid Metal Finishing
Reid Metal Finishing (RMF) is committed to maintaining the highest standards of quality and safety for our clients, our team, and the environment. As a metal finishing company that regularly works with potentially hazardous materials, we’ve taken several measures to maintain that safety, such as maintaining RoHS compliance.
What is RoHS?
RoHS stands for the ‘Restriction of Hazardous Substances’, and dictates a directive in the EU regulating the use of certain hazardous materials specifically found in electronics. The goal of these regulations is to improve the safety of users as well as improve the environmental impact of suppliers and manufacturers around the world. The directive focuses on 10 particular substances known for posing a risk to the health and safety of the environment and the people who come into contact with them. Lead and mercury are the two that often come to mind when people think of RoHS, but the list also includes materials used in metal finishing operations, like cadmium and hexavalent chromium.
RoHS Compliance in Metal Finishing
Metal finishing techniques tend to involve the use of some potentially dangerous chemicals, some of which are heavily restricted under the RoHS. Reid Metal Finishing maintains compliance with the RoHS standards as often as we can, limiting our use of cadmium and chromium in our treatments unless the particular application fulfills the exceptions that the RoHS lays out, and avoiding other hazardous materials listed in the directive. We also offer a wide range of metal finishing services, many of which are known alternatives to hexavalent chromium and cadmium plating. Our team is cross-trained to safely perform several different plating and anodizing methods, and we stay up-to-date on any new handling techniques for the chemicals used in metal finishing.
