Chem Film

Reid Metal Finishing

Along with our other coating services, Reid Metal Finishing offers Chem Film treatment, a chemical conversion coating that protects aluminum from corrosion, without warping the dimensions of the aluminum component.

What is Chem Film?

Chem Film or Alodine, is a type of coating that is primarily used to passivate aluminum. This both protects the metal from corrosion, and forms a base for further painting or the addition of adhesives. Chem film can also protect aluminum components from loss of conductivity as well, an excellent characteristic in electrical applications.

This type of treatment has many applications, used on the aluminum components for everyday applications, automotive wheels, aircraft hulls, and much more. Aerospace companies especially have benefited from our chem film coating, as it protects many vital components for landing gears and flight control systems.

Other metals benefit from chem film as well! We can apply this coating to copper, cadmium, tin, magnesium, zinc-plated steel, and iron to protect them.

There are a few different types of chem film, distinguished by their chemistry and their shape. Those include:

  • MIL-DTL-5541
  • AMS-2473 & 2474
  • MIL-C-81706
  • AMS-C-5541

REID METAL FINISHING’S CHEM FILM

Once the component is thoroughly cleaned, we apply this thin chemical coating by either dipping the component in the alodine, or brushing or spraying the coating onto the component. Our trained staff take the time to pre-treat your components properly for optimal chem film application. You don’t have to worry about any environmental concerns with our coatings either–we take time to ensure that the impact of our coatings is kept to a minimum.

We are also very experienced in a variety of standards for chem film treatment. Reid is Nadcap®️ accredited and our quality management system is AS9100-certified. You can trust us to adhere to a high degree of industry standards and customer requirements.
