Fluoride Phosphate Conversion Coating

Reid Metal Finishing

At Reid, we are always looking for ways to expand and improve our processes. One of the more recent finishing services that we’ve added is a fluoride phosphate conversion coating for metal components made from titanium alloys.

A brief overview of chemical conversion coatings

Chemical conversion coatings are a unique type of surface treatment. Rather than coating the metal with another metal or film, the treatment causes the surface of the metal to undergo a chemical reaction, changing the surface into a thin, protective layer. They have many benefits, with the main one being improved corrosion resistance and a uniform, inert surface that provides an excellent base for powder coatings and paints.

Chemical conversion coatings are popular for other reasons as well. They are excellent for electrical applications, preserving the conductivity of the parts. The process itself is generally more environmentally friendly than other treatments as well, and is excellent for everything from everyday tools to the components of complicated equipment.

Fluoride Phosphate Conversion Coating

Fluoride phosphate conversion coating was developed to treat the surface of titanium alloys. In addition to improving corrosion resistance, this treatment creates a surface that is receptive to anti-galling and organic finishes.

Process

  1. The component’s surface is cleaned and the necessary parts are masked prior to treatment.
  2. The component is immersed in the conversion bath for 2-4 minutes before being removed, rinsed, and dried.
  3. The surface is tested and inspected for spotting, pits, or other imperfections that could be detrimental to the performance of the coating.

The fluoride phosphate conversion process results in a gray-colored protective coating that is thin and uniform, not affecting the dimensions of the parts. This is generally a quick and efficient process overall, with excellent quality and a high-performing surface finish.
