One of the several plating options that Reid offers is Cadmium plating. This is a very application-specific process, commonly done to metal components used in the Aerospace industry, or in salt-fog environments.
A QUICK OVERVIEW OF CADMIUM PLATING
Cadmium plating is a soft coating that can be deposited on a variety of metals, such as different types of steel, copper, and iron. This type of plating is unique in that it is a sacrificial type of deposit, which makes it an excellent choice for corrosion protection. As a result, cadmium plating is utilized widely in the Aerospace and Marine industries.
The types of cadmium plating are distinguished by their thickness (referred to as ‘class’) and by whether or not they have a supplementary chromate or phosphate treatment. Each of these classes and types have their own unique benefits and applications. Don’t forget to specify which type and class of cadmium plating you’d like us to perform when you contact us!
Types of Cadmium Plating
Type I is cadmium plating at its most basic level, with no added treatments.
Type II refers to cadmium plating with a supplementary chromate treatment to increase corrosion protection when exposed to salt spray.
Type III refers to cadmium plating with a supplementary phosphate treatment that allows it to be best used as a paint base.
Classes of Cadmium Plating
Type I refers to a cadmium plating with a minimum thickness of 0.0005 inches.
Type II refers to a cadmium plating with a minimum thickness of 0.0003 inches.
Type III refers to a cadmium plating with a minimum thickness of 0.0002 inches.
Cadmium plating at Reid Metal Finishing
Our cadmium plating can offer excellent corrosion resistance at a relatively low-coating thickness, while also imparting beneficial characteristics to the metal, such as increased strength, malleability, and lubricity. It also works well as a final finish for the component, or even as a base for paints. Cadmium-plated components can even resist contaminants like mold and bacteria growth.
