Electrolytic nickel plating is one of the most commonly used types of plating and one of our main options. At Reid, we use nickel plating for mild and high-strength steels, stainless steels, aluminum, and many other metal components. Thanks to its versatility and the excellent characteristics of this type of coating, it has become widespread across many different industries.
A quick introduction to Nickel Plating
Once the substrate to be plated has been cleaned and pretreated, it is placed in a conductive bath with nickel and then exposed to an electrical current. This causes a nickel deposit to attach to the substrate and form a protective coating on the component. At Reid Metal Finishing, we perform this type of plating with exceptional deposit uniformity, lubricity, and hardness, and improve the component’s performance overall.
Electrolytic nickel plating offers more material purity compared to other types of plating, as it can be done with 100% Nickel, making it generally less expensive than electroless nickel plating. Nickel plating can also be completed at higher production volumes with shorter turnarounds, making it slightly more productive as well.

The main benefit of Nickel plating is its high concentration of nickel. This imparts enhanced conductivity to metal components and thus is excellent for components that require this characteristic. Nickel plating also gives components improved heat resistance–up to over 1,800°F.
